Background

Patriot Freidrich Ludwig Jahn (1778-1852), also referred to as Father Jahn, was instrumental in the early beginning of Turnerism in Berlin, Germany. He also developed the first apparatus to be used in the gymnasium.

Early  German immigrants, followers Jahn, established the first gymnasium in this country in a school near Northampton, Massachusetts. Their achievements planted the seed and birth of this organization, the Springfield Turnverein, in 1855 in Springfield, Mass. We are affiliated with the   American Turners, a national organization founded ten years earlier in 1845.

Father Jahn implemented the method of organized scientific physical exercise and by following his motto "A Sound Mind in a Sound Body" the Springfield Turnverein became one of the foremost institutions in social, cultural and physical education in our area.

In1968 we relocated to Agawam. We kept the family together once again by giving everyone the opportunity to participate in various activities. Our beautiful location and facilities offer members and their families a variety of programs like physical education, bowling, choral singing, German language classes, fishing, dinner dances and other cultural endeavors.

The future of the Springfield Turnverein, our community and our nation depend on the moral character and physical fitness of our children. The health of the nation is its most important asset. This can be achieved by training "A Sound Mind in a Sound Body" and teaching the young the ability to think straight and live right.

We invite you to become a member and share these principles and ideals with us.
